Team Leader, Engineering: Role and Responsibilities

As the Team Leader, Engineering within Weka’s Core group, you will play a critical role in enhancing the quality, reliability, and performance of our distributed data platform. This hands-on leadership position involves managing a team responsible for developing essential internal tools (for debug, development, and testing) and the overarching build infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead a global development team across Israel and Europe, maintaining a 60% hands-on involvement in development activities.
  • Build Infrastructure Evolution: Drive the development and widespread adoption of Weka's next-generation build infrastructure.
  • Developer Velocity: Lead initiatives focused on improving the core developers' experience through better build systems, development workflows, and debug/instrumentation tools.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with automation infrastructure (DevOps), QA infrastructure, and development teams to boost overall velocity, quality, and efficiency.
  • AI Integration: Scale the build environment by integrating AI-driven tools for automated test generation, intelligent workload synthesis, and anomaly detection.
  • Mentorship and Culture: Influence and mentor engineers across teams, fostering a strong culture of efficiency and high velocity.

Qualifications

  • Extensive Experience (5+ years): Proven expertise in designing and implementing robust development and build pipelines.
  • Strong Programming Skills: Proficiency in languages like Go, C++, and Rust.
  • Linux Expertise: Deep experience with Linux scripting.
  • Enabling Engineering: Demonstrated ability to create frameworks or platforms that enhance engineer productivity and product quality.
  • Modern Development Practices: Familiarity with containerized environments and CI/CD tools/frameworks.
  • AI/ML Interest: Experience with, or a strong interest in, leveraging AI/ML to optimize development pipelines.
  • Leadership and Influence: A track record of technical or managerial leadership, effectively influencing teams beyond your immediate scope, defining technical direction, and mentoring colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Linux system programming and network concepts.
  • Familiarity with various developer tools:
    • Build systems (e.g., Bazel).
    • Tracing and logging systems.
    • Compilers (e.g., gcc, ldc, dmd).
  • Programming proficiency in functional languages, such as Python.
