DevOps & Reliability Engineer
Who are we?
Webiks builds data-driven software and AI systems that solve real problems. Our work spans GenAI and agentic systems, geospatial (GIS) platforms, machine learning, and large-scale web systems, for clients in defense, government and the commercial sector. We favor open-source technologies, and our project teams combine Full-stack Developers, DevOps Engineers, Data Scientists, Product Managers and UX/UI Designers.
You'll join the team behind one of our flagship projects: a national-scale public platform that serves as critical infrastructure for government and public workflows. It runs on AWS in the government cloud and serves as a map engine and data API for other systems. When major public announcements go out, traffic can jump by orders of magnitude within hours.
Who are you?
- You see reliability, observability and infrastructure as a product, not an afterthought, and you want to own them for a system used nationwide.
- You want to work inside a development team, not in a separate ops silo. You understand how a feature flows through the code, the pipeline and the infrastructure, and you make that flow faster and safer.
- You'd rather find problems in a dashboard than hear about them from users.
- You use AI tools (such as Claude Code) daily for infrastructure-as-code, scripting and troubleshooting, and you know when not to trust them.
- You learn fast, enjoy variety, and like turning "it works, mostly" into "we know it works, and we know why."
What you'll do
- Build observability from the ground up: metrics, tracing (OpenTelemetry), dashboards and alerting across services, databases and edge.
- Own infrastructure changes on AWS via Terraform, including EKS, RDS (PostGIS), OpenSearch, CloudFront, and messaging and caching layers.
- Run load testing and capacity planning ahead of peak events, and improve autoscaling.
- Tune performance across the database, caching layers and GeoServer.
- Modernize CI/CD and release safety, and improve developer experience and tooling for the team.
- Lead security hardening and patching, and design backup and disaster recovery.
- Drive incident investigation and blameless postmortems.
- Estimate costs and design solutions that balance effectiveness and cost.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of hands-on experience in DevOps, SRE or platform engineering, or as a backend developer with significant ownership of production infrastructure.
- Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes, preferably EKS - a must.
- Strong experience with Terraform - a must.
- Hands-on AWS experience running production workloads - a must.
- Experience building observability (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, OpenSearch/Elastic) - a must.
- Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines - a must.
- Daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools in your work - a must.
- Ability to read, debug and make changes in Node.js/TypeScript backend services - a must.
- Solid Linux and networking fundamentals.
- Experience with AWS government or landing-zone environments (e.g., Nimbus), multi-account networking or Transit Gateway - a significant advantage.
- PostgreSQL/PostGIS performance tuning - a significant advantage.
- Familiarity with GIS systems such as GeoServer and map tile serving and caching - a significant advantage.
- Experience with high-traffic public systems, load-testing tools (e.g., k6), or WAF, rate limiting and bot protection - an advantage.
